As part of the European Malnutrition Awareness Week (MAW) 2025, Hungary will host a national campaign to raise awareness of disease-related malnutrition and reinforce the importance of early identification and nutritional care across healthcare settings.

Organised jointly by ONCA Hungary and the Hungarian Dietetic Association (MDOSZ), the campaign will combine professional education, public communication, and policy engagement under the shared European mission of Optimal Nutritional Care for All.

Core Objectives

The Hungarian campaign seeks to strengthen awareness, promote evidence-based nutritional screening, and highlight the need for systematic action against disease-related malnutrition.

By integrating communication, data collection, and professional collaboration, the initiative aims to ensure that nutrition becomes a visible and measurable component of quality healthcare in Hungary.

Key Activities During MAW 2025

Throughout the week of 10–14 November 2025, Hungary will carry out a series of national communication and professional activities to engage both healthcare professionals and the wider public.

Core activities include:

  • Press release (5–6 November): Launching the campaign nationally, outlining goals and highlighting the role of nutritional screening in healthcare quality.

  • Social media campaign: Coordinated posts across the social media channels of ONCA Hungary team members, sharing key facts, patient stories, and infographics to raise awareness of disease-related malnutrition.

  • Participation in Nutrition Day: Organised by the Hungarian ESPEN Society, this event will engage professionals nationwide in discussions and data collection activities related to nutritional care in clinical settings.

  • Newsletter features: The campaign and related materials will also be featured in the newsletters of Hungarian ONCA Working Group members, ensuring broad dissemination across the professional community.

Looking Ahead: Strengthening the Evidence Base

A major focus for ONCA Hungary and MDOSZ in 2025 will be the preparation of a pilot study planned for 2026.

This cross-sectional national survey will investigate:

  • The professional practices of malnutrition risk screening, and

  • The prevalence of disease-related malnutrition in Hungarian hospitals.

The study will be carried out across three regions of Hungary, involving nine institutions that represent the country’s inpatient care system. Data collection will take place in spring 2026, and the preparation phase during MAW 2025 will lay the foundation for this important evidence-building effort.

Collaboration and Communication

Through the leadership of MDOSZ and ONCA Hungary, and the involvement of national professional bodies, the campaign ensures strong coordination between healthcare professionals, academic partners, and policymakers.

By combining awareness efforts with scientific preparation for national data collection, Hungary’s 2025 campaign reinforces both the visibility and credibility of the fight against disease-related malnutrition.
