More information: klinicnaprehrana.si

As part of the European Malnutrition Awareness Week (MAW 2025), Slovenia is launching a national campaign to raise awareness of malnutrition and sarcopenia, particularly among older adults in hospitals, nursing homes, and home care settings.

Led by ONCA Slovenia and the Slovenian Association for Clinical Nutrition (SZKP), in collaboration with the Institute of Oncology Ljubljana, the National Institute of Public Health (NIJZ), and the Ministry of Health, this year’s campaign emphasizes education, early screening, and practical interventions to prevent and manage malnutrition.

Policy Objectives

Slovenia’s MAW 2025 focuses on strengthening the capacity of primary care providers and healthcare professionals to recognize and manage malnutrition in diverse care settings.

Key policy objectives include:

  • Raising awareness among healthcare providers about the prevalence and risks of malnutrition in older adults.

  • Encouraging regular screening, monitoring, and nutritional care across hospitals, community, and home care settings.

  • Spreading knowledge and best practices across primary, secondary, and tertiary care levels.

  • Promoting self-empowerment and practical knowledge regarding prevention, recognition, and management of malnutrition and sarcopenia.

Rationale: Malnutrition and sarcopenia remain largely underdiagnosed in Slovenia, and there is often insufficient knowledge and guidance for caregivers and healthcare professionals on how to identify and manage these conditions.

National Initiative: Tackling Malnutrition Together (Skupaj proti podhranjenosti)

From November 10–14, 2025, Slovenia’s MAW will focus on education, awareness, and collaborative action.

The initiative aims to:

  • Inform healthcare professionals about the prevalence, risks, and management of malnutrition.

  • Promote regular screening, monitoring, and nutritional care in hospitals, communities, and home settings.

  • Engage the public and policymakers to strengthen national initiatives and partnerships.

Key Activities

Slovenia’s MAW 2025 includes a wide range of activities targeting both healthcare workers (physicians, dietitians, nurses, medical students) and the general population:

  • Life-Long Learning (LLL) modules — in person, specifically:

    • Topic 3: Screening, Diagnosis, and Assessment of Malnutrition More info

  • Press conference or presentation at the Ministry of Health to present MAW 2025 national initiative, including malnutrition screening and diagnostic criteria.

  • NutritionDay participation to collect data and promote awareness.

  • Posters and awareness materials displayed in health centers, specialized university hospitals, and research institutions.

  • Events throughout the week (10–14 November) including workshops, lectures, and community engagement.

Collaboration and Impact

By raising awareness, educating professionals, and engaging policymakers, Slovenia continues to strengthen its commitment to Optimal Nutritional Care for All.
