Spain’s Malnutrition Awareness Week 2025: 10 Years of DRM Awareness – Time to Reflect, Time to Act
Dates: November 10–17, 2025
National Partners: ONCA Spain, Alianza Másnutridos – Desnutrition Cero en el SNS, and SENPE
More information: Alianza Másnutridos | SENPE
As part of the European Malnutrition Awareness Week (MAW 2025), Spain will celebrate a landmark edition highlighting a decade of disease-related malnutrition (DRM) awareness.
Led by ONCA Spain, the Alianza Másnutridos, and SENPE, this year’s campaign is themed:
“10 Years of DRM Awareness: Time to Reflect, Time to Act”, reflecting on past achievements and charting the path for the next decade.
Policy Objectives
The campaign focuses on strengthening the visibility and recognition of DRM at all levels:
-
Raise awareness among patients, healthcare professionals, and public administration about the importance of DRM.
-
Celebrate 10 years of Alianza Másnutridos, highlighting the milestones achieved in DRM advocacy and care.
Rationale: Although the alliance has actively promoted DRM awareness for over a decade, the message has not fully penetrated all levels of the healthcare system. Sustained action remains necessary to ensure patients at risk are identified and treated promptly.
Key Policy Ask: “10 Years of Raising Awareness About DRM. Now What?” The focus is now on deepening political, professional, and public engagement to translate awareness into systemic action.
National Initiative: Awareness Day & 10-Year Manifesto
A highlight of the week will be the Awareness Day, held on November 17th at the Madrid Medical Association.
The event will feature three thematic panels:
-
Territorial overview of DRM: Representatives from multiple Spanish autonomous communities will present regional initiatives and outcomes.
-
Overview of DRM member entities: Scientific societies such as the Spanish Society of Geriatrics, Spanish Association of Surgery, and the Spanish Society for Healthcare Quality will discuss progress and alignment with ESPEN DRM Week.
-
Political overview/management of DRM: Politicians and policymakers will join to discuss strategies for improving DRM detection and care.
During the event, the Alianza Másnutridos will publish its 10-year manifesto, outlining the roadmap for the next decade in DRM awareness, policy, and patient care.
Planned Activities
In addition to the Awareness Day, Spain’s MAW 2025 will include:
-
Media campaign with press releases highlighting national progress and policy needs.
-
Social media awareness campaign on X to engage professionals, patients, and the public.
-
Educational activities in medical schools, promoting DRM recognition and management among future healthcare professionals.
These activities ensure that the campaign reaches all relevant audiences, from patients and caregivers to clinicians and policymakers.
Collaboration and Impact
Spain’s 2025 MAW exemplifies cross-sector collaboration, combining the expertise of scientific societies, professional associations, and patient organizations. By reflecting on achievements while mobilizing for the future, Spain is reinforcing the European commitment to Optimal Nutritional Care for All.
