#PTMAW2023 Optimization of Nutritional Care in the Community

From November 27th to December 3rd, Portugal celebrates, for the fifth consecutive year, Malnutrition Awareness Week in Portugal, a pioneering initiative that is part of the activities of the international ONCA campaign and the 2nd edition of ESPEN Malnutrition Awareness Week. It is a joint ONCA/ENHA action, with the scientific support of APNEP, in which, in addition to Portugal, 14 countries have already joined: United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Spain, Denmark, Germany, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Greece, Italy, Austria, Sweden, Hungary and Israel.

This year, Malnutrition Awareness Week in Portugal takes place simultaneously with the Spanish edition of Semana de la Desnutrición.

This 5th edition has the motto “Optimization of Nutritional Care in the Community” and its main objective is to raise awareness among health professionals, patients, and caregivers about malnutrition in Portugal, both at hospital level and similar health institutions, as well as in outpatient clinics and at home. This initiative also presents the following complementary objectives:

  • Educate for the early identification and treatment of malnutrition;
  • Educate patients/caregivers so that they can discuss their nutritional status with their healthcare professional;
  • Raise awareness of the central role of clinical nutrition in patient recovery.
