Leading Intestinal Failure Equality
The initiative, part of the ONCA campaign, is led by a pan-European expert steering group including patients. LIFE recently published its manifesto calling for early diagnosis, comprehensive care, equitable access to IF treatment and enhanced collaboration through data sharing and partnerships.
Following a highly successful second edition of 1F Day, LIFE initiative is pleased to share the 2026 Campaign Summary Report.
Building on the momentum of the 2025 launch, this year’s campaign significantly expanded its reach and impact, bringing together patients, healthcare professionals, policymakers, and organisations across Europe to raise awareness of intestinal failure and the inequalities in access to care.
The campaign delivered a coordinated, pan-European effort, including:
Across Europe, local initiatives translated awareness into action. From patient-led events and hospital activities in the UK and Belgium, to parliamentary engagement and landmark illuminations in Poland, and the launch of a new intestinal failure department in Slovenia, 1F Day demonstrated the power of coordinated advocacy and community engagement.
Importantly, the campaign was driven by a growing network of patient organisations and professional partners, reinforcing the LIFE initiative’s call for early diagnosis, equitable access to treatment, and stronger collaboration across countries.
While awareness is increasing, the message remains clear: intestinal failure continues to be under-recognised and access to life-saving care such as home parenteral nutrition (HPN) remains unequal across Europe.

Intestinal Failure (IF) is a life-threatening condition that impairs the body’s ability to absorb vital nutrients and fluids due to significant loss of gut function. It often results in prolonged hospitalisations and numerous distressing medical procedures, that can have a destructive impact on quality of life [1]
Many patients rely on life-saving home parenteral nutrition (HPN), which is considered the gold-standard of care. However, its availability varies significantly between, and within, countries and IF continues to be under-recognised and underfunded across Europe.
1F Day is focused on highlighting disparities in access to treatment. We’re calling on policymakers and healthcare professionals to support a future where patients receive equitable care, healthcare professionals collaborate efficiently across borders, and policymakers drive change that will save lives.
